During the First World War, the Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkartenfabriken (VSS) edited at least four war packs with German suit-signs. Three of them are in my collection. The Stralsund branch produced the in 1914/15. The cards shown are from the Schafkopf version with 36 cards. The box is from a version with no names on the Kings and slightly different index signs.

The cards were designed by Herrmann Petzoldt. The Deuces all show the emperor Wilhelm II. The court-cards, the Tens, and the Nines show reigning persons, military leaders, and politicians. On the rest of the pip cards, a ship of the imperial navy is shown, except on the Six of Hearts (42 cm bomb) and the Six of Bells (Zeppelin airship).

On the back are Iron Crosses and the name of the pack.
